Approach
Higher-protein diets: what the evidence shows
Higher protein intake improves satiety and preserves lean mass during energy restriction — one of the more reliable findings in the field.
What the evidence supports
Higher protein intake improves satiety and preserves lean mass during energy restriction — one of the more reliable findings in the field. [1]
The benefit is preservation of lean mass and appetite control, not a metabolic advantage that removes the need for an energy deficit.
Why the comparisons keep converging
Large head-to-head trials — DIETFITS being the clearest — repeatedly find no significant difference between sensible dietary patterns at twelve months, with enormous variation within each arm. The between-diet difference is small; the between-person difference is large.
That points at adherence rather than composition, which is why the useful question is not which diet is best but which one you will still be doing in a year.
Other approaches
- Mediterranean pattern — established
- Low-carbohydrate and ketogenic — established
- Total diet replacement — established
- Intermittent fasting for weight — established
- Detoxes and cleanses — popular but weak
Does higher-protein diets work?
Which diet is best for weight loss?
Why did I lose 3 kg in the first week?
Why is maintenance so much harder?
